speaking of hairstyles...

Family_2

At Heddy's request I am posting a picture of the triangle cut with perm that I donned in the 80's....this picture was taken on a good day : )  Sometimes it didn't look so neat....talk about high and wide...and now it's all about flat flat flat.....

I am quite certain that dress had very wide shoulder pads too, so you can see that my hair was almost as wide as my padded shoulders....hard to believe that picture was taken almost 20 years ago...

memories

Senior_pic_2_2

Donna challenged us to post our Senior pictures from high school days; I opted out.  But when I saw Dawn's it brought back so many memories of  the '70's hairstyles, drapes, marching band, and drill team...  I had to share : )
Funny, I never remember anyone else wearing this "style" but Dawn's is so similar I had to laugh!!  Of course, she doesn't have those little flippy things in front....what was up with that?

No smile here....I had to hide those awful braces...those metal ones we had before wearing braces was stylish and trendy with all the fun colored bands...

I was a skinny little thing...105-110 pounds...never ever worried about weight or what I put in my mouth but  ::sigh::  things change....

The most important thing to me during my senior year was cruising the main drag of my little hometown listening to the Carpenters and the Supremes and the Beatles, honking at friends as they passed going the other direction.  Ha....I had so much to learn.

When I saw this tea cozy while visiting Anne's blog I knew I just had to have it, and when I visited her Etsy shop I found this pretty apron....and just had to have it too :)  When the package arrived today, I was pleased to find that both were as beautiful as I had imagined.  This  apron is unique to my others, in that it is only 13" in length.....I just love the style.

sneak peek

Shades_4

Here's a little sneak peek of my fabric shade project...I still think I want to trim the windows in a wood casing painted white.

The lighting here is tricky and really does not do the color justice :)

fun

Totally inspired by Clarice at Storybook Woods and others she mentions and links to in her posts about journaling   here, here, and here I spent time this weekend gathering my own tools to journal with.

I think I have mentioned that my sister and I loved to play paper dolls for hours on end when we were growing up, and one of the most satisfying things about that was designing and cutting out clothes for them. We sometimes actually cut our paper dolls out of old catalogs and magazines....when store bought were scarce...

Sunday evening I had so much fun perusing old magazines and cutting out scenes that I thought were pretty...to start my artsy journal.

I have been journaling off and on for years, but think this added dimension will be so much fun!

Can't wait to use my new Martha Stewart  writing pen, one of the goodies I chose recently from her Michaels display.

labor day

_mg_6242

Since today is Labor Day.....I thought it useless to sit around...so John and I labored over making window treatments for my dining room windows....
It all started when I went to Jo-Ann Fabrics on Friday and found some yummy material that I thought would make pretty drapes.  The problem was, they only had 4 yards and I needed a lot more.  I thought it would be easy to go to another Jo-Ann's and find more of the same fabric but soon found out that it was on clearance in all their stores, so there was none to be found.  The good news is that the fabric I got was only $4.00.
I have been looking at fabric online to see if I can find something similar and have found some that I like.....
But I got to thinking that I could buy some cheap roller shades and use them to make shades with the fabric I have...for now...
So that's what I did....today....
I just googled How to Make a Fabric Shade....and the rest is history....

I trimed, pressed, fused and fray checked the fabric...then we cut it and then John stapled it to the roller, and then rolled and hung it for me....
It was not a super difficult thing to do....but I could have never done it without him :)

Now I just have to finish the bottom edge by making a casing to place the wooden slat back in.....but my sewing machine is out on loan....and won't be back till Wednesday...
And, as with most projects around the house one thing leads to another....next on the list is casing the windows with a pretty molding...I'll post a picture when it's all finished :)

5 minute note cards

I have been having fun making these little, what I've named, 5 Item 5 Minute Note Cards the past few days...

  1. find an envelope about the size that you want your finished note card to be
  2. cut a piece of card stock approximately 1/4" smaller than the dimensions of your envelope
  3. cut a strip of scrapbook or wrapping paper or pretty fabric to fit
  4. adhere to the side of card stock with sticky tabs or glue
  5. cut a piece of cute ribbon about 4" to 6" in length... find the center of your card and punch two holes about 1/4" apart; with the finished side up, loop one end of the ribbon through each hole; turn the card over and criss cross the ribbon ends then pull each back through the holes; trim to desired length

I like them either with the bow to the side or turned to the top.... :) ooooh and wouldn't a little ric rac look cute to finish that edge?
....and now I'm off to fill them with greetings....  ~Debi

We had a fun weekend puttering around the house and yard and watching Trey while his mommy and daddy went out for their special date time.  Since it was Jenna's turn to choose what they would do, she chose Geocaching as their afternoon outing.  It was the first time they had tried it; they had a lot of fun...and so did we....with Trey.

When John found out he was coming, he rushed out and bought a toy truck and a toy car : )

Tonight's menu consisted of oven baked Talapia, chicken flavored rice, and Marinated Green Beans.

Marinated_green_beans

The steamer you see in the picture above is one of my favorite kitchen appliances...Black and Decker for about $20.00 at Target...

...I have had this green bean dish several times, as my sister-in-law, who is a wonderful cook by the way, makes them.  I ran across a recipe in my  Holly Clegg's Trim and Terrific Diabetic Cooking cookbook and thought I'd try her version...I liked it, but would use just a little less Dijon mustard next time.  [this is also good with just the tomatoes....omitting the green beans]

Oh, and I added the Feta cheese that it mentions....I think it just completes the dish : )

The Talapia was delicious too!  Just dip fillets in an egg/milk mixture and roll in Italian flavored bread crumbs mixed with garlic Parmesan cheese and a little paprika.  Bake at 450 for about 5 minutes, flip and cook another 5-6 minutes....tasty!
